The economic losses caused by floods have increased significantly over recent decades in Europe and many other parts of the world. In order to reverse this trend assessments of the flood risk will be made throughout EU in the coming years and management plans will be prepared for the vulnerable areas.
A three-stage process has been defined: After a preliminary flood risk assessment hazard maps are prepared to prioritise investments before actual flood risk management plans are made for selected areas.
DHI has developed specific tools and services for the implementation of these steps, based on the MIKE suite of software. One step leads to the next in a logical sequence, which helps build experience and understanding.
