Introduction to Real-Time Forecasting

The application areas of FLOOD WATCH cover real-time flood forecasting and warning; decision support and scenario analyses; real-time optimisation of dams and reservoirs dissemination and flood mapping; water quality forecasting. Designed for use in real-time environments, FLOOD WATCH integrates spatial data, real-time data, forecast models and dissemination tools in a GIS or web based environment. The system includes a GIS client designed for use by staff working in office and a web client designed for use by duty staff working remotely.

The 2-day course supplies professionals with an overview of the aspects to be addressed when working with real-time data and forecast models in an operational environment. Professionals that may benefit from this course includes flood managers, flood forecasting staff, dam and reservoir operators and decision makers.

It is an advantage, but no condition, that participants are acquainted with the functionalities and operations of MIKE 11 HD prior to the course either through practice or through completion of the training course Introduction to River and Channel Modelling with MIKE 11.

Advanced Real-Time Forecasting

This 5-day course supplies professionals with a thorough understanding of aspects to be addressed when working with real-time data and forecast models in an operational environment. Staff that may benefit from this course include flood forecasting staff, dam and reservoir operators and decision-makers in real-time forecasting based on observed data and model forecast results. The course provides the participants with a thorough understanding of the aspects of real-time forecasting from the setup of forecast models, through the development of interfaces to telemetry data sources to working with models and data in a GIS environment.

An increasing number of urban areas are under constant risk of flooding. Intense rainfall overwhelms the drainage system, or extreme sea levels, overtop dikes and inundate our cities. The risks are amplified by the expected effects of climate change. A wide variety of computer-based tools are available for understanding urban flooding, analysing “what-if” scenarios and trying out mitigation measures. These tools vary considerably in complexity and applicability.

This 3-day course aims to bridge the gap between the availability of technically-sound analysis tools and their practicable application within the constraints of time, cost and quality, public acceptance and political approval. The course is designed for engineers and planners who want to gain a more thorough practical insight into the different modelling techniques for urban flood analysis. Priority will be given to participants with computer modelling experience and who are familiar with ArcGIS, MIKE URBAN (or MOUSE), and MIKE FLOOD prior to the course.
